Transmission & Driveline

  • Transmission maintenance is often overlooked and can seriously harm your vehicle. Our skilled technicians give expert advice and service according to factory standards. We offer fluid packages for front and rear differentials, transmissions, and transfer cases, along with road tests and visual inspections. We are fully approved for OTM Warranty Driveline Services.

For optimal care for the long life of a vehicle, it’s recommended that you change transmission oil every 80,000 km or refer to your owner’s manual for specific recommendations.

  • Proper fluid requirements and levels can be complex, so we also inspect and maintain:

    • Engine oil

    • Transfer case fluid
      Lubrication for your 4 x 4 case.

    • Differential fluid
Lubricating oil for front and rear differential assemblies.

    • Power steering fluid
Hydraulic oil that helps with steering assist.

    • Brake fluid
Hydraulic oil that transfers pressure from your brake pedal to the brake.

    • Transmission filters and oil
They work as a lubricant and cool the transmission.

    • Coolant
Regulates the temperature of your engine.

    • Washer fluid
Winter antifreeze and summer bug remover.

  • Checked for quality and volume. Colour and odor are giveaways that these fluids have begun to break down chemically and by heat and wear, requiring them to be replaced. If these fluids are low, we check your systems for leaks.

The goal is to maintain the best performance and longest life for your vehicle.

hvac

  • All vehicles have a heating and A/C system that will at some point require servicing to keep them at peak performance. We have the latest and up to date A/C diagnostics and repair tools. With your older vehicle, we can retrofit the A/C system to take the latest and most environmentally friendly refrigerant. We can service any vehicle’s A/C system and heating system.

    • Coolant flushes

    • AC recharge

    • High-pressure tests

    • Rad cap testing

    • Block heater testing

    • PH testing of the acidity in the coolant

    • Fan replacement

    • Hose replacement

    • Belt replacement

    • Compressor replacement

  • To prevent the vehicle from overheating, the cooling system works by circulating the mixture of water and coolant through the engine. As time passes, the cooling system components can become clogged and damaged by scale and rust that can build up in the deteriorated coolant.

    • The Check Engine warning light is on.

    • The Low Coolant warning light is on.

    • The engine is overheating.

    We recommend

    • If your vehicle’s low coolant light comes on, let us do a deep inspection for leaks.

    • It is recommended to follow the service maintenance schedule and replace the fluid. A good practice is to do this every 65,000 km. This is an important part of taking care of your vehicle.

Tire rotation, balancing
& repair

  • We can repair a problem tire or find the right new tire fit for your vehicle. Regular tire rotations and properly aligned, inflated & balanced tires will help save you money on gas.

    • Sawtooth appearance on the edge of the tires

    • Outer edges of the tire are wearing faster than in the middle

    • Quicker wear on the front to the rear tires

    • Excessive wear on one side

    • Cups or dips in the tread; this interferes with the proper tire contact with the road

There are a number of causes for tire-wear problems, including:

    • Your tires are not properly inflated or balanced

    • Your vehicle is misaligned

    • The vehicle’s shocks and struts are worn

    • Worn steering components

    • Worn suspension components

We diagnose and address any tire issues you might be experiencing.

Tire lights and pressure issues are not a problem anymore. At Macleod Auto & Truck Repair we have the latest technology in tire monitors and can handle tires from 13” tire to 24”.

  • If your vehicle’s wheels are making noise and if over time the noise becomes more prominent, you may need a wheel bearing replacement.

    • Misaligned and unbalanced tires will wear out more quickly.

    • Does the vehicle pull or drift out of lane? Your tires likely will show uneven wear upon inspection.

    • Keep an eye on the position of your steering wheel. If the steering wheel looks crooked even when you’re driving straight, your alignment is off.

Eyes on your PSI, to make sure your tires are inflated to the right amount:

    • Under-Inflated Tires: Under-inflation results in excessive sidewall flexing; reducing your vehicle’s carrying capacity and your fuel economy too. Excessive shoulder wear is a sign of a “soft” tire. This “soft” tire makes your vehicle have to work harder.

    • Over-Inflated Tires: Over-inflation of the tires and issue will result in the center of the tire tread; as the center now bears most of your vehicle’s weight. Faster and more irregular tread wear, often resulting in the need to repair or replace your tires sooner than expected. Inspect your tires regularly and follow the vehicle’s manual for proper inflation pressure, and if you have an issue, we are here to get you back on the road.

Uneven wear to tires reduces the traction of the vehicle

Neglecting to rotate your tires can cause uneven wear, noise, or pulling. This can make driving in Calgary's snowy winters and rainy summers dangerous. It's important to follow your owner's manual and have your car serviced regularly. We will thoroughly check your tires and alignment with the latest technology.

Engine Repair & Diagnostics

  • Modern vehicles have many electronic parts, from turn signals to radios. These parts are essential for convenience and comfort. When they malfunction, it can be confusing. Let us help you identify the issue and get you back on the road with ease and reliability.

We are an AMA/CAA repair facility, and with your membership to AMA/CAA you receive a 5% discount on your Interstate batteries and all other services we offer.

    • Bad Alternator
Failure of the alternator will have the vehicle pulling power from the battery. Because the alternator is now no longer recharging the battery, it will eventually run down. The initial symptoms mimic a bad battery and without replacing the alternator, you will be walking soon.

    • Blown Fuse
The fuse acts as a safeguard against voltage spikes. Smaller (less electricity-intensive) components on your car require a fuse in order to operate.  If too much electricity flows through the wires, the fuse blows, breaking the circuit.

    • Failed Relay
There are many relays in a vehicle. The most important would be the main relay, which operates the car’s computer and fuel pump. In the event the main relay fails, none of your electronics will operate.

    • Wiring Damage
It can happen almost anywhere in your vehicle. Wiring damage has many causes. Rust and corrosion at a ground point can render a component inoperable. A vehicle collision and even little critters can also be an issue with stored vehicles.

    Next steps:

We thoroughly inspect your vehicle, both inside and out, including checking any broken electronic parts. We test for electrical issues, voltage levels, the battery, and the alternator. After that, we identify the possible problems and guide you on the next steps for repairs. If you're facing a major issue, have Brady evaluate and diagnose it, as we promise a solution.

  • A faulty battery can lead to an alternator failing early and vice versa. We use a carbon pile tester for checking your electrical system instead of a handheld digital tester. This approach allows for better diagnostics, as handheld testers don't evaluate the system accurately. Our AVR tester performs a thorough load test on the battery to check for issues like sulfation, low charge, or insufficient charging from the alternator. It also evaluates the alternator's ability to maintain and charge the system. With our AVR system tester, the technician drives the diagnostics, not the device like a handheld unit.

Electrical Diagnostics
& Driveability

  • The Check Engine Light offers no explanation and can be one of the most confusing warnings in your dashboard. It can be as serious as a malfunctioning catalytic converter or as trivial as a loose gas cap.

OEM quality or OEM exact parts are used in repairs for most driveability and tune-up issues. Our technical staff has over 25 accreditations from the factory and aftermarket industry; that includes everything from computer control systems to full engine mechanical operations.

    • Loose or damaged gas cap
If the gas cap is loose, a quick tighten could easily solve your problem. If it is damaged, then a replacement is needed.

    • Faulty oxygen sensor
A proper diagnosis is best. Deterioration of the precious metals inside the catalytic converter affects the sensors’ ability to give an accurate reading. Neglecting the issue can eventually damage your catalytic converter and the engine itself.

    • Failing catalytic converter
Generally speaking, a catalytic converter will not fail if you properly maintain your car. A failing converter can be the result of a failing ignition system or another engine efficacy issue.

    • Faulty mass airflow sensor
Have your air filter checked and replaced on a yearly basis. It is possible to drive for months with a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor. This is a bad idea; as your gas mileage will drop and the vehicle will start becoming less efficient and consume more fuel.

    • Bad spark plugs & wires
While newer cars can go up to 100,000 km on a set of plugs, older vehicles, (especially those built before 1996,) could require new plugs roughly every 60,000-80,000 km. We can make quick work of the job and new plugs in most cases are very reasonable.

    What to expect:

During the inspection, your car’s monitoring system will have “fault codes”, that indicate the nature of the problem. The technician will provide a detailed report that describes the diagnosis. You will then be contacted with the necessary repairs and an estimate before work commencing.
